Grandpa Bud was the kind of guy that, at 90 years old, would offer to hook his his 35 year old grandson up with Viagra because "He didn't need it."

Nowadays, every trivial thought is saved for all eternity on the internet. My grandpa didn't have the internet, so I'll miss hearing his stories. About his life, the Store, his broken fingers from playing baseball with no glove, the big fish, the small fish, the fish that got away, the big prize he won at Fort Hall, and the spud factory. I still proudly tell of my family heritage of making potato chips and bootlegging moonshine from the potato mash. I'm glad I got to know him as long as I did, and glad that he could always remember the stories of his youth.

So, in that vain, I'm going to tell a few stories about my youth, and my grandpa.

We stayed the night a lot at my grandma and grandpa's house when we were little. We thought it was because grandma and grandpa wanted us around, and, while it was, it was more because my parents wanted time alone. Truth, I'm glad they did, because it gave me one of the most memorable new year's eves of my life. My grandpa, like a lot of people in the 70s, had a Super 8 movie camera. It was very cool, silent and made movies that looked so amazing there are 1000 apps you can run on your iPhone to make the camera look that way. In order to get the movie to look good however, you needed a lot of lighting, so my grandpa also had some pretty massive movie lights. Grandma and grandpa agreed to have me and my brother spend the night on new years eve, promising us a new years celebration. Grandpa set up the camera, clipped the lights to the top of his recliner, passed out party hats and noisemakers, and proceeded to film my brother and I running around like, well, kids. After a short time, the lights started to heat up. Now these lights were clipped onto a recliner. A fabric recliner. So while we were busy, having the celebration of a lifetime, my grandpa's recliner caught fire. Not a big fire, but enough to damage the chair, and freak us out just a little. I guess we're lucky he owned the furniture store.

Every Christmas Eve, we would have a big dinner with the family. It usually consisted of our family, Aunt Helle, Uncle Kenny and Barbara, Grandma Grace and Grandpa Burt, and Grandma Ellen and Grandpa Bud. One year, my brother and I had a pair of walkie talkies, so after dinner, a short time before bedtime, Grandpa Bud took one of the walkie talkies, snuck out of the room and began to talk, pretending he was Santa Claus. Keep in mind, this was the 70s, CB radios were really in vogue, so as long as he started the whole conversation with "Breaker 1-9" and put in a lot of Ho-Ho-Ho's, it was completely plausible to a 6 year old that he was talking to the real Santa Claus on his toy walkie talkie. He told us about his trip, that the reindeer were flying extra fast, that Rudolph was hungry, and that we'd better get to bed because he'd be there soon. I'd like to say I rushed to bed and went right to sleep that night, but I had just talked to "the man" and was far too excited to sleep.

For me, however, the story doesn't end there. Every year since then, if I'm able to see grandpa at Christmas, he has to recount the story of the walkie talkies, how excited we were, how big our eyes got, and you could really see the joy that our excitement as kids had brought him for many years. We spent Christmas in Pocatello this year, and I got to hear it again. Best Christmas ever.

My grandpa taught me a lot about life, whether he meant to or not.

He taught me that any TV, no matter how good it looks, can be made even more impressive with the words, "That's a good picture"

He taught me that on a Saturday afternoon, when it's not busy, it's ok to sleep at work.

He taught me that any child will laugh when an old man sticks out his false teeth at them.

He taught me that buttermilk is not just a cooking ingredient, but a viable beverage option, and, after drinking a glass, the proper response is to set the glass down, wipe the milk mustache off your face and emphatically say the word "Good."

He taught me that an earnest smile and a good sense of humor are two of the most valuable things a person can own.

If there's one thing I learned from my grandpa that has stuck with me from the age of 6 until the age of 42, it's this. People from Utah cannot fish. I remember many a day, in my youth, on the shore at Daniel's Reservoir when a boat would pass by with a trolling motor, stirring the water a bit. From that moment forward, through dinner, hot dogs and s'mores by the fire, the conversation was always peppered with comments about the "Damn Utahn's" Now, I don't know much about the politics and territorial boundaries of the modern day angler. But back then, it was simple. We were from Idaho. We sat on the bank, or in a boat, and we fished. We didn't troll over other people's line. We didn't bogart somebody else's "hole" when we saw them catching a bunch of fish. That was the Utanhn's. Sure, we chummed the water a little when fish & game wasn't looking. We hid a few fish when we were over our limit. But we were Idahoans, we had honor. At an early age, my grandpa taught me how to fish like an Idahoan. Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day, teach him how to fish he'll eat a lifetime. That was how he taught me how to fish, and it has affected my life in more ways than he'll ever know.

I'll miss him.
